Why this course exists
Queensland’s pool safety laws, briefly
Commencing in December 2010, new pool safety laws were introduced to Queensland, requiring every regulated swimming pool and spa pool to be inspected prior to the sale or lease of the property. A Pool Safety Inspector is engaged to conduct this inspection, and provided the barrier is compliant with the Pool Safety Standard, a Pool Safety Certificate is issued to the pool owner within 2 business days.

- The role and function of a Pool Safety Inspector when conducting inspections of pool barriers
- Interpret and apply Queensland pool safety legislation — Building Act 1975, the Pool Safety Standard, and QDC MP 3.4
- Plan and conduct compliant inspections of regulated swimming pools and spa pools across Queensland
- Assess pool barriers against the Queensland Pool Safety Standard — gates, latches, fencing, signage

Applying for your Pool Safety Inspector licence
Once you’ve completed your assessments, becoming licensed is a QBCC application process. Here’s what’s involved.

Receive your Statement of Attainment
Issued once your written assessment and practical video have both been marked and passed. A 90% pass required.

Arrange Professional Indemnity Insurance
Required as part of your licence application. Jacqui can point you toward a provider if you're not sure where to start.

Submit your QBCC licence application
Along with your Statement of Attainment, proof of PI insurance, evidence of identity, and the licence application fee.

Start conducting inspections
Your licence is valid for 1 year. From your second year, you'll need 6 CPD points annually to renew it.

What is the 11067NAT Course in Swimming Pool Safety Inspections?
A person wanting to become a Pool Safety Inspector must complete the Nationally Accredited 11067NAT Course in Swimming Pool Safety Inspections. The qualification you receive is required to apply for your licence through the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). One unit is covered: NAT11067001 — Conduct a pool safety inspection. Without this course and the subsequent QBCC licence, you cannot legally conduct pool safety inspections or issue Pool Safety Certificates in Queensland.
Why are pool safety inspections required?
Prior to pool safety laws being introduced to Queensland in 2010, drowning in the backyard swimming pool was the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 5 in swimming pools. This industry directly contributes to ensuring there is a compliant pool barrier that will restrict a child entering the pool area. Active adult supervision is still very important.
Is the APSIC course delivered live or self-paced?
Live. Jacqui teaches the full 2.5-day theory component in real time via Zoom — not pre-recorded modules. You attend alongside other students, ask questions as they arise, and complete your written assessment during the course. Only the practical video assessment remains after the 2.5 days are complete. Assessment requires a 90% pass mark. Self paced courses usually require 100% pass mark.

Every APSIC course enrolment includes 3 free onsite inspection queries with Jacqui after you graduate — valued at $150. It’s real, practical support as you carry out your first inspections, covering questions on the QBCC process, real-world scenarios, and getting your business up and running.
How do I apply for my QBCC licence after the course?
After successfully completing the 11067NAT course (with written assessment and practical assessment and 90% pass required), you receive a Statement of Attainment through RTO 40963. You then apply for your Pool Safety Inspectors Licence through the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). Jacqui guides every APSIC student through this process. You are never left to figure it out alone.
Can this course qualify me to inspect pools in NSW?
Yes. The 11067NAT is nationally accredited. Once you hold a QBCC Pool Safety Inspectors Licence in Queensland, you may apply for mutual recognition as a Registered Swimming Pool Inspector (previously E1 Swimming Pool Certifier) in New South Wales. APSIC has trained students from NSW specifically for this pathway. Contact Jacqui to discuss your situation before enrolling.
How much does the pool safety inspector course cost?
The full course fee is $1,450. An early bird rate of $1,390 applies when you enrol within 48 hours of your first enquiry. Payment is required to secure your place in the course. Only limited places available.
Can I build a full time business as a pool safety inspector?
With more than 450,000 regulated swimming pools in Queensland, required to be inspected prior to the sale or lease of the property, the answer is yes. This is a legislative requirement, therefore there will be an ongoing business need for inspections.
Who can enrol — are there any prerequisites?
No prerequisites. The course is open to anyone. Jacqui has trained inspectors from trade backgrounds, real estate, council, emergency services, and people seeking a complete career change. Year 10 literacy and numeracy is the only requirement, as you need to read and interpret pool safety legislation during the course.
I am not a builder, is this necessary to successfully complete this course?
No. There are no pre-requisite requirements for enrolment in the Queensland 11067NAT course. You will be taught all of the pool safety compliance requirements during the course to inspect a pool barrier. Your job is to inspect not construct the barrier. If you do have building experience, this may assist you in being able to conduct minor repairs.
Is this a difficult course to complete?
This course is not difficult when completed in a ‘face to face’ environment, or via zoom, with direct access to your trainer. This course is technical and does require you to understand all of the pool safety compliance requirements for a compliant pool barrier under the pool safety standard. This course is related to child safety so having real access to a real trainer is important. You need to achieve a 90% pass for your assessment.
I have never done a zoom webinar before. How does it work?
It is so simple! Jacqui will email you the invitation. You open your email, click on the link and you will then be ‘in the classroom’. Your fellow students and Jacqui will be visible on the screen and you will be able to speak using your computers/laptops/phones microphone. So convenient. No need to travel.
