The swimming pool laws in NSW are more complex than other States
While the QLD 11067NAT qualification is fully recognised under the Mutual Recognition pathway, and will allow you to apply for your NSW Swimming Pool Safety Inspector licence (previously E1 Certifier) it is essential that you also obtain the requisite knowledge to be able to conduct an inspection in NSW in the correct manner.
What are some of the key differences?
Pool Safety laws are State based legislation, not federal. NSW pool safety is governed by its own Act and Regulation, referencing barrier requirements that don’t always align one-to-one with the QLD framework you’ll be trained under.
QLD requires a Pool Safety Certificate for sale or lease (valid for 1 yr shared pool/2 yrs non shared pool). NSW requires a Certificate of Compliance for sale of property (valid for 3 years).
In QLD a boundary fence may be less than 1800 mm in height, provided not less than 1200 mm with NCZ on neighbours property. In NSW, under AS 1926.1-2012, a boundary fence must be 1800 mm in height with the NCZ measured on the pool owners side of the property.
The QLD and NSW Mutual Recognition pathway is a valid pathway, and will result in a licence in NSW. It is important that you then consider how you will gain the additional knowledge you will need to conduct pool safety inspections in NSW in a competent manner.
This industry directly contributes to child safety, so it is essential you understand those differences. If you have a colleague who can guide you, that is great! If not, you may need to consider doing some further education regarding the NSW legislation and Standards.
